ART WORKSHOPS AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION IN RURAL SCHOOLS

GALO PLAZO LASSO EL TOPO SCHOOL - IMBABURA

Niños en el Arte develops artistic and community-based educational programs in rural areas of Ecuador, creating spaces where children and adolescents can strengthen their creativity, critical thinking, and connection to their environment through art.

The “Niños en el Arte – Imbabura” project is carried out in the community of El Topo, in the parish of San Pablo del Lago, Imbabura province, in partnership with the Galo Plaza Lasso School. The initiative works with children and adolescents ages 4 to 17 through art workshops, community awareness-raising activities, and educational support for teachers and families.

The project aims to strengthen access to cultural rights in rural communities where opportunities for artistic education are often limited. Through participatory methodologies, it promotes the conservation of the natural environment and cultural heritage, encourages reading, and fosters the development of critical thinking from an early age.

Objective

To provide children and adolescents in the El Topo community with opportunities to engage with the arts within their rural school, thereby strengthening their holistic development, their cultural rights, and their capacity for self-expression and community participation.

Specific objectives

• Implement art workshops for children and adolescents over a six-month period.
• Organize community exhibitions where families and the community can learn about the creative processes that have taken place.
• Document the process through audiovisual materials and community storytelling.
• Develop experiential workshops focused on coexistence, awareness-raising, and best practices.
• Strengthen pedagogical tools for teachers and workshop leaders through training programs.
• Raise awareness about environmental conservation, cultural rights, and the value of community identity.

• Approximately 398 children and adolescents aged 4 to 17 from the community of El Topo.

• Community members who have benefited indirectly through cultural activities, exhibitions, and community-building initiatives.

What workshops are being offered?

VISUAL ARTS AND CREATIVITY

Spaces for artistic exploration that allow children to engage in imaginative, playful, and collaborative creative work using a variety of techniques and materials connected to their environment and community memory.

BODY EXPRESSION AND MOVEMENT

Programs focused on the body, expression, and social interaction, where children and adolescents build confidence, communication skills, and teamwork through artistic and playful activities.

EXPERIENTIAL AND COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS

Activities designed for teachers, families, and workshop leaders to strengthen teaching tools, promote respectful treatment, and foster more meaningful connections between schools, communities, and local areas.

INVESTMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

The project includes investment in arts education, community engagement, audiovisual documentation, educational materials, and teacher support. By 2026, the project also aims to strengthen community education programs, audiovisual production, and well-being initiatives for workshop leaders and participants, adjusting operational and logistical resources to ensure sustainability and continuity across the region.

Where is the project located?

The project is being carried out in the rural community of El Topo, in the parish of San Pablo del Lago, Imbabura Province, primarily at the Galo Plaza Lasso School and in community spaces associated with the cultural and educational activities of the project.
